GentleTemps

commentary

Gentle temps greeting mammals and birds, songs forgotten have returned as the pair of cowbirds are back, the robins serenade, blue jays drowned out by the persistent cardinal, cats enjoy being outside and prowling (Morris from next door just strolled by), Rev put the chickens away this morning for practice, horses are now released from the corner and Isaboo is nibbling along exploring  her vast new territory as Lancer finds old crab apples and blown away hay.

Mostly Cloudy

break of sun

Interested parties looking for that break in the clouds, where did it go? Chickens scratching up leaves and garden refuse searching for bugs and worms, a slight tinge of green showing randomly in the lawn, birds returned singing familiar songs, wind a bit cruel contributing a chill, geese honk and woof the air flying to the lake as April settles in.

Running Again!

race
Running under muted sunshine, racing ahead of clouds, mildish day shaping up after a chilly overnight complete with a light frost, shadows crisp as Rev joins the fun – distracting him from practicing chicken rustling which was extremely successful yesterday afternoon, intense coat shedding, rolling to leave mats of horse fur on the brown ground, hoping to see green creep back into the landscape now that most of the snow is gone.

Rototilling

run-1

Recently released chickens, after finally venturing outside the barn, were promptly herded back in by Rev with much glee, then horses, not wanting halters, run rototilling around the paddock, slinging sod, digging holes with hoofs, turning over the struggling grass, shaking off winter’s coats while further delighting the dog!

The Lamb Arrives

spring
Brightly blue sky above and – yes it really is – grass and the ground revealed, horse teeth and tongue attempting to stretch it up from below, acorns broken open, shedding coats and old branches, horse fur of white and brown awaiting birds to weave it into nests, sun high and cheery with no clouds to break the welcome warmth and light; the lamb arrives at last, hope it isn’t a fool’s errand!

Spring

chase

Sloppy, slippery, ice in branches, abating frozen rain, melting now, brightening sky, birds hiding quietly, complex network of rodent tunnels exposed to the surface, grumpy games ensue in the paddock, where is spring anyway?

Neighboring Herd

fans

Mild, melting, muddy, mushy, marvelous signs of spring appear as icy snow gives way to water and saturated soil slimes shoes and hoof, flowing downhill to where the visitation from a neighboring herd provides curiosity about what might be in their pockets?

Peepers Anyone?

watching

Winter’s grip relaxes providing a warmer, barely windy, almost sunny morning, chickens actually venturing outside finally, juncos departing, cardinals resuming the wonderful song of Spring interrupted by coarse blue jay screeching, listening hard for the sound of peepers – anyone heard them yet?

Still Quite Cold

still cold

Though the sun is high its warmth is negligible, soft breezes bring bitter cold from the North and the stubborn snowpack remains, Isaboo proves quite a magician – an expert escape artist, undoing the bungie cord and the stall’s latch to let herself out and stand a few feet nearer to Lancer – we have fastened it now so this will be impossible but her intelligence and determination brings smiles to our faces as we await warmer days and the return of the ground.

Morning of Many Juncos

two

Scant sun melting light frost from the morning, eating grain in the barn and hay outside for breakfast, icy buckets and juncos everywhere, wicked shedding going on despite the still cold temps, chickens feeling cooped up but reluctant to go out into the frigid pen, Isa aims a few at Rev and pins her ears back throwing her head around in warning – otherwise she is quite sweet and learning to come to a whistle for food, Lancer is learning to ask nicely for his peppermints, both awaiting warmer days and the return of grass.
