Loosening the Icy Grip

stroll

Almost balmy today compared to the long stretch of icy fingered single digit mornings, fluffy coat softening to a velvety relaxed reddish brown contrasting with cooler tones of gray in the sky and on the ground, expecting birds to return with Springlike temps, poopcicles marring the view will be melting for removal around back, dogs delighted that paws aren’t paining from the now past grasping cold.

Still Wicked Cold

trot up

Still wicked cold, looking lovely with those deep blue skies, still wicked cold, sun shine abundant but – still wicked cold and the whispering wind reminding us it can be even still wicked colder!

Back in the Freezer

chase

Back in the freezer under partly cloudy skies, Rev feeling frisky fooling around, all this excitement flushing birds out of the crab apple tree, NW winds hustling, bustling winter’s business along, sun chasing shorter days away.

Welcome to the New Week!

soft

Tightly curled rhododendron leaves return to a relaxed shape in milder temps – Lancer fluffed and soft amidst the cold, hard stone and wood – freezing rain and snow intermittently spitting with changing air from the south – gray with a dark start to the day – temporary respite from the chill as January wanders through winter. Happy Winter Weekend!

stick

While winter has fattened the sleepy Sterling cat – finally the day has come that she wished to go out, the forgotten sound of screen door climbing returning before long, milder temps energizing Rev leading him to find a giant stick, Lancer fueling up with his butt into the rambunctious winds, blowing forelock reveals his white blaze, an easier day to be out, morning beginning a bit earlier, enjoy the Weekend, celebrate life! Stay Warm!

taste

Taste of bitter chill mixing with sweet spearmint among icy whiskers, wind chomping at the bit, wicked cold under the bluest of skies, sun reflecting from snow making the season bright but not able to provide warmth in the big freeze, dressing for the arctic with every horse hair sticking straight out and fluffing off the penetrating winter day.

Sun Struggling!

out
Dogs unable to outrun the extreme cold as the sun struggles up into clearing blue skies, a light white dusting (possibly) fell overnight, no snow registering on the hoof-o-meter, seems as if one of the herd has taken the snow to the south with her (!), any water that was – is now – a solid chunk, birds disappearing after a short visit during the thaw, light wind biting bitterly, abundant hay will efficiently warm the horse and even in the inhuman environment – he thrives! Winter Prepares

breakfast

Chilly start under gray sky with feeble attempts by the sun, nipping wind stealing feeling from bared skin, a cold calm before the storm, frozen buckets are back, the ice pile growing again, chickens remain imprisoned by their own volition while winter prepares its next event. Sticking Snow

snowy
Colorless in the field, Lancer mixes with snow in the scenery, using his nose to expose what very little remains, soon to be covered with the white blanket as flakes fill the air, busy birds gathering too and the songs are a welcome sound in the hush, robins occupying the crabapple showing the only signs of color while knocking avalanches off the branches in pursuit of the fruit in the bleak and graying, day.
