About Lancer

The Weather Horse, Lancer; it is what it is. Lancer, is 17 years old, 15-3 hands and 1/4 Percheron and 3/4 Quarter Horse. His friends include Rev and Little John the dogs, Sterling the cat, Zito the horse amongst many other humans. He lives outside (in at night) and has become quite good at reporting the weather in Ashburnham, MA, Elevation 1200ft. He likes carrots and peppermints along with grain, grass and hay.

Chilly!

dog blur

Sun slow to rise – angled to light the treetops but not the ground yet, wicked chilly morning, hurting Rev’s ‘s paws as he rockets around trying to escape the cold, Lancer just fluffs up his coat and concentrates on eating the hay that warms him from within, brightness coming, white reflecting light with no heat under lovely blue.

Some Snowfall

snow pony

Snow fall last night through earlier this morning smothering grass and ground, the frightening orange machine blowing white clouds high to be swept away in sudden gusts, water changing quickly to ice, the day shortening under gray skies.

Flurries

hay seat

Snow squalling, cold beginning, wind from many directions, hay providing warmer seating, spotty sun breaks disappearing, ice thick in buckets freezing, coat thick with droplets of flurries on the tips sticking.

Frozen Munching!

cool munch

Dropping temps, dropping snow overnight, winds occasionally whipping, stirring light flakes into blasts of cold, hungry horse keeping warm despite the freezing, high pressure creating clear conditions with a sun that only looks hot, bundle up and stay safe!

Crispy Bright and Blue

north side

Crispy bright and blue, wind kicking up from the NW pushing manes and tails, fluffing fuzzy fur to insulate – tips rippling in little waves across the generous fat layer – big drink of fresh unfrozen water finishing off with flakes of hay, Rev rockets from the barn to catch up with Lancer under the welcome return of sun and light.

A Day to Bring Some Inner Light Into!

Close

Colder, wet snow freezing overnight, lack of light washing color and contrast from the landscape, Rev sneaking behind Lancer with a stolen poopcicle after a warm morning nap on a lap by the stove in the early darkness, ice thickening in the buckets even from below as the barn adjusts the floor temp to reflect the solidifying ground, crunchy, white and setting up like concrete!

A Gray Way to Start

eating in

Eating in today, precipitating in various ways, maybe an accumulated inch, some misty freezing rain, an occasional flake, some times a big drop, a short wander out leaving neat hoof prints, a quick return for more dry hay, no chickens venturing forth, a gray way to start the day and week to come.

A Calm Morning

angled light

A low rising sun sending angled rays from the East warming bare treetops, most snow remaining from yesterday’s fall, no chicken footprints in the pen – curiosity absent from the small brains? – ground hardening and gluing down anything left out on it, clouds seeming to increase losing color to the grays, almost browns and washed out hues of the evergreens.

Happy Warm Friday!

blur dog

Warm moist air split by a streaking fly-by of black dog coming from behind, disappearing past the hay pile, misty on again – off again rain, temps deceptively not like December, ground soft – somewhat saturated – under hoof, colder in the barn than outside, chicken light providing an extended laying season in the ever shortening days.

Light Rain…

looking

Never really lightening from the dark of dawn, warm enough to nudge green into the browns of the lawn, Lancer looking for something more to eat, a balmy December day, excepting the rain, is sweet.
