Passing Through

leaning in

Bright beginning to a new year, winter settling in with coldness despite the sun, the layer of ice now covered with a light sprinkling of white making it mostly slippery, Catalpa seed pods dancing in light breezes, Lancer fluffed in response to a the chill, Rev strolling through the hay pile caught in the sideways light, orange cat and white dog passing through the field below each in their own time, the constant path of past, present, future to move us all passing through.

Biting Brisk

coming out

Beauty blue with biting brisk, bright light reflecting sky hues to crispy snow crunching, quickly freezing filled buckets, sled skimming easily across icy ground, Lancer leaving a cold barn to munch among the nipping winds, noises breaking against the hard environment amplified with cracking sharpness.

Good Morning!

good morning2

Gusty gales whipping ice sheets off the greenhouse, electric fencer blowing fuses, water still in buckets – not frozen – paddock hardening into slippery patches, Rev is back with an exuberant greeting after a brief attempt at a roll on the remains of a rodent found in the crusting snow, sunlight’s slanted rays striving to rise in and out of clouds and bring forth the changing day.

Mild and Melting

Lancer

Mild melting temps, increasing cloudiness, softening ground, chickens venturing forth from the little door to explore the exposed earth outside, good day to clean the ashes from the stove, bring in the last pile of firewood, to wish fond farewells and honor endings.

Morning Stroll

dec2013

Sun finally above the tree line, fresh coat of white from yesterday cheering the drab pasture, ice broken from buckets piling up, charming winter morning seeming now to fade under clouds increasing, winds aloft pushing past, air below is still and hushed, growth is hunkered down awaiting the longer days to come. Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season for all.

Freezing Rain

big trot

Heavy clouds dimming, cold drops freezing, low mist crawling, hay pile calling, grass appearing, snow disappearing, day lasting longer on the eve of the eve before Santa is coming.

Winter Beginning!

good morning

Wonderfully warm and melting already, roaming robins mixing reds with the crabapples remaining, nuthatches pointing towards the ground and quietly crooning in contrast with screeching jays scattering, sun peeking from clouds increasing, soft underhoof as fence is clicking, electriciy pulsing after repeated leaving as Lancer is limited to the corner pasture and drinking, his pile of hay awaiting the shortest day, Winter beginning!

Warming Slightly

back snow

Another layer of white stuff piling up overnight, a little bit of snow remaining on the back of the Weather Horse exemplifying the truly amazing efficiency of his insulating abilities, the sun shining brightly enlivening the browns of the stubborn oak leaves to a deep russet, contrasting nicely against the deep blue sky.

Wickedly Cold

shadows

Heading out to hay, Lancer, Rev and shadows under sunny (for now) skies, wickedly cold with loudly squeaky snow under hoof, thankfully no wind to chill, frozen everything, not a chicken venturing out since snowfall – laying more occasionally now even with the timed light providing an extended day, high clouds coming with more winter weather later.
