This too shall pass…

jump

A warning nip with flattened ears, ripping wind causing eyes to tear, clear song calling from cardinal red, high in treetops from overhead, against the deeply bluing sky, bright bird repeats its lonely cry, shadows long under mornings light, freezing temps with a wintry bite, cold season still is holding fast, though – as with all things – this too shall pass.

The Crust Thickens

heading to the barncu

Bright and blue sunny sky, morning full of flocking chickadees with cheery song, sun warming (just barely) and reddening the shedding winter coat, looking for hay while the crust thickens, Rev running rambunctiously, cold wind still delivering winter with whipping chill.

February’s Lion

run away

A changeable morning without sun, then with, still cold temps chasing paws along icy paths, subtly chilly wind keeping our world hard in the last of February’s Lion, the approach to March a test of New England resilience and attitude, hoofs growing and coat still shedding promises changes coming soon!

Oh Revvy!

north

It is another “Oh Revvy” moment in the shadowy north side of the barn, pasture looking messy in contrast to the white of snow, cold wind belaying the idea of warmth created by the lengthening light of day, birds are bravely emerging from where ever it is they have been all winter, buckets remain freezing and chickens inside, partly cloudy, breezy and gray.

Knee Deep

deep snow

Knee deep and well crusted snow, winds whipping shadows and clouds to and fro, approaching cold coming in like the tide, the harbinger of Spring has apparently died!

Slight Shedding!

shedding

Gentle winter warmth melting, shrinking, disappearing blanket revealing dormant little grass spots along paths, mudding driveway, making ice-flows layering slippery slopes, slight shedding showing with long hairs dropping and matting on Lancer’s fuzzy back, a temporary reprieve from February’s hold.

Misting Out

misty

Misting out, sloppy, slushy, fine droplets dripping, warmish though, not freezing, remaining soft for now, the resident ice pile is losing its edges, melting snow seeking lower ground or simply packing into cement-like consistency, chickens still without any interest in leaving the barn but thankfully providing eggs, Lancer enjoying hay in the low cloudy gray in spite of it all!

Falling, Flying, Frozen, Flakes!

snowfall

Falling, flying, frozen flakes decorating nose and ear, blanketing backs, burying bucket’s broken ice, another bit of white to cover tracks and freshen piles, packing banks to narrow paths, slicking roads to slippery ways, stay on safe trails today!

Bite of February

face off

Early face-off playing with Rev under deeply clear blue, long shadows joining the game, sneaky winds whipping streaks of chill, buckets mostly frozen overnight, self imprisoned chickens still providing eggs to put in pockets – but be careful not to forget them in there 🙁 while working around the barn – awaiting a treat today, nice bright light accompanies the welcoming birdsong to lessen the bite of a February day.

Blustery & Blowing

mouthful

Fierce winds directionally undecided, blustery and blowing the hay away, deep blue sky with partial clouds, the fresh 2-4″ relocating into desert like drifts, white devils rising and whirling only to disappear into another gust, trees stiffly waving and shedding snow, the day settling into winter’s way.
